ICFE Supports National Protect Your Identity Week

San Diego, CA -- The nonprofit Institute of Consumer Financial Education (ICFE) has joined the public-private coalition that supports Protect Your Identity Week (PYIW), an initiative of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC), the National Sheriffs' Association and the National Association of Triads which is taking place October 20-27, 2012.

This year's theme "ID Theft Protection on the Go" is focusing on how the increasing use of smart phones by consumers presents greater risks for identity theft. Consider the following:

  • The sales of smartphones outpaced the sales of personal computers last year;
  • Growth of smartphone sales is expected to continue for the next four years, and
  • Sixty-two percent of smartphone owners do not utilize passwords to protect their phones.

"As a coalition member, the ICFE supports the Protect Your Identity Week message that small steps can result in increased protection against identity theft. A recent online poll conducted through ProtectYourIDNow.org revealed that the majority of consumers, 64 percent, believe they are at risk of identity theft.

ID Theft prevention authorities suggest consumers can use this week to do one of their periodic check-ups to assess their vulnerability to identity theft, and use the Resources at the Protect Your Identity Week Web site to identify simple steps to reduce their risk of being a victim of identity theft," A recent online poll revealed that the majority of consumers, 64 percent, believe they are at risk of identity theft.

The PYIW national campaign's Web site - ProtectYourIDNow.org - highlights Resources and community events aimed at identity theft protection and education. There will be close to 100 Protect Your Identity Week events across America from October 20-27, many offering free shredding of personal documents, responsible cell phone recycling, workshops, speakers, ID theft protection handouts, and credit report reviews.

The ICFE has developed the nation's only "Certified Identity Theft Risk Management Specialist" - CITRMS® educational and certification testing program. There are about 5,000 individual CITRMS® worldwide. The ICFE also makes available the nation's only "Certified Credit Report Reviewer - CCRR® educational and certification testing program. There are about 3500 individual CCRR® worldwide. Many hold both certifications. For more information please visit ICFE.info.

About the ICFE:

The Institute of Consumer Financial Education (ICFE) was founded in 1982 by the late Loren Dunton (creator of the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation).  The ICFE is dedicated to helping consumers of all ages to improve their spending, increase savings and use credit more wisely.
The ICFE is an award winning, nonprofit, consumer education organization that has helped millions of people through its education programs and Resources. It publishes the Do-It-Yourself Credit File correction Guide, which is updated annually. The ICFE has distributed over one million Credit/Debit Card Warning Labels and Credit/Debit Card Sleeves world wide.

The ICFE became an official partner with the Department of Defense/Financial Readiness Campaign in June of 2004.The ICFE was an active partner in the California Student Debt Resource Awareness Project (CASDRAP) which resulted in a new web site: (studentdebthelp.org).  CASDRAP disbanded in 2010, shortly after the web site project was completed.  In 2011 the ICFE assumed the single sponsorship of the (studentdebthelp.org) web site and is now responsible for its content and operation.

The ICFE is also an on-line help for consumers who spend too much.  ICFE's spending help was featured in PARADE Magazine in the Intelligence Report section. The money helps and tips are from the ICFE's Money Instruction Book, our course in personal finance.

Visit the ICFE's other web sites at: www.financial-education-icfe.org and studentdebthelp.org.  Both sites helps consumers and students with mending spending, learning about the proper use of credit, budget and expense guidelines, how to set up and implement a spending-plan and also how to access financial education courses and how to teach children about money. Other ICFE services include: Ask Mr. G,  a free eNews, and an online resource center for students, parents and educators, plus financial education learning tools and a book store.
