"National Survey Finds Americans Overwhelmingly Oppose Racial and Gender Discrinimation at Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) "

June 25, 2015 - Washington, D.C. - In a poll conducted earlier this month by Zogby Analytics for the US Consumer Coalition (USCC), Americans overwhelmingly registered their opposition to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) being able to operate under different employment standards than other federal agencies. The poll also addressed Americans' feelings about allegations of racial and gender discrimination at the CFPB. These issues will be highlighted in a hearing by the House Financial Services Subcomittee on Oversight and Investigations this morning.

  • 73% of respondents agree that the CFPB should be held to the same anti-discrimination standards as other federal agencies;
  • 66% of respondents said that CFPB Director [Richard Cordray] should be fired over an incident where it is alleged that CFPB officials referred to a division with a large number of African-American employees as 'The Plantation';
  • 66% of respondents said that the CFPB Director [Richard Cordray] should be fired over an incident where it is alleged that a CFPB official referred to an employee as a "f***ing foreigner"; and
  • 77% of respondents agreed that women with equal experience and qualifications should be paid the same as men at the CFPB.

"We applaud Chairman Duffy and the Members of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations for bringing national attention to the abuses of the CFPB. USCC hopes that this hearing, along with our recent poll, will raise awareness about a number of the questionable activities of the CFPB and serve as a catalyst for real reform to protect America's consumers from the so-called 'consumer protector,'" said USCC senior advisor Brian Wise.

"Thanks to the new evidence that has been brought to light by the Committee's investigation, it has become clear that the CFPB is an agency that believes it can make its own rules, even if that means racially discriminating against their own employees. While President Obama is actively calling for an end to racial discrimination, he is ignoring blatant and widespread allegations of racism within his own Administration, and allegedly allowing his own appointees to cover up its existence."

The US Consumer Coalition (USCC) is a grassroots consumer advocacy organization working to protect and expand access to free-market goods and services.
